Findlay was born in Scranton, PA on May 21, 1920. He received his bachelor's degree from Princeton University in 1942, and his Ph. D. in organic chemistry in 1948. He worked as a research chemist for the National Institutes of Health from 1949-1957. His primary areas of research include cholorine oxidation of organic sulfur compounds, plant hormones, alkaloid chemistry, stereoisomerism and synthetic organic chemistry.
